The Dolomites
The Dolomites are a chain of mountains belonging to the Souther Limestone Alps. They are spread out over the provinces of South Tyrol, Belluno, and Trentino.

The mountains consist largely of fossilized coral reefs. This mineral is referred to as "dolomite," and includes many different varieties (e.g. so-called "Schlern" dolomite or "principal dolomite").

The abrupt shift from the gently undulating meadows to the steep limestone cliffs upon which they rest is characteristic for the Dolomites.

The following peaks are among the most-important mountains of the Dolomites:
  • Sella
  • Marmolata
  • Tofana
  • Langkofel
  • The Geisler Peaks
  • The Puez Group
  • Fanes
  • Schlern Massive
  • The "Rose Garden"
  • The Latemar Group
  • Pala
  • The Prags Dolomites
