STROBLHOF SÜDTIROL

In the idyllic South Tyrolean valley of Val Passiria/Passeiertal, in the village centre of St. Leonhard, you’ll find the Stroblhof Active Family Spa Resort Südtirol. The hotel, which was first documented as an inn 350 years ago, is now a modern holiday retreat in a class of its own. Learn more about our eventful history and prepare to be amazed!

The early years

The Stroblhof, first mentioned in a document from 1658 as the “Gasthaus zum Einhorn”, was known as the Stroblwirt by 1768. Following a fire, the Strobl family rebuilt the inn, laying the groundwork for the enduring Stroblhof tradition. Only a few years later, the inn was taken over by Andreas Hofer’s closest confidant, Johann Holzknecht. His son Franz ran the business until his death on 17 May 1862, after which the Stroblhof was auctioned off and bought by Josef Ladurner from Meran. By 1888, the Stroblhof had changed hands again to Josef Tschöll, whose son modernised the establishment to meet the standards of the turn of the century.

The World Wars

In 1919, South Tyrol was annexed by Italy, and the country was Italianised at Mussolini’s demand. The inn was temporarily renamed the “Stella Alpina”. During the Second World War, the Stroblhof was occupied by the German “Wehrmacht” army – the dining room was converted into a small factory for the production of explosive devices. After the war, the innkeeper of the Stroblhof, Josef Tschöll Junior, passed away, leaving no heirs. Ownership of the Stroblhof was divided equally among five church institutions, which entrusted its management to tenants.

The new beginning

The Pircher family has owned the Stroblhof since 1954. Johann Pircher and his wife Rosa Trompedeller lovingly ran the inn until the building was seized during the South Tyrolean bombing years and used to house the riot police from September 1964 to May 1965. After the building was released, Johann Pircher Junior and his wife Anna Klotz took over and gave the Stroblhof a new look in the early 1970s. It was during this time that the new main building was constructed, and a 3rd and 4th floor were added in 1974.

The modernisation

In 1980, an annexe was built. In 2000, the underground car park was created, and the Siguna Spa wellness area was built in 2005. In 2007, the current hosts, Hansjörg Pircher and Sara Keller Pircher, took over the family business and implemented new ideas. In 2007, the Dolce Vita Lounge and the Vinotheque with its well-stocked wine racks were added, and in 2011, the Crystal Vital Residence with its 10 new suites was opened, and the indoor swimming pool was built.

In 2013, Hansi and Sara created even more space for well-being. The second part of the Crystal Vital Residence, with saunas, chill-out areas, and 18 comfort suites, was created, and the dining and buffet area was redesigned. Further renovations followed in 2014. The hotel’s tavern became an elegant wine & cocktail bar where numerous events take place.

The great transformation

The year 2017 marked a historic transformation at the Stroblhof, with the construction of the third section of the Crystal Vital Residence and the renovation of the main building. New pool areas were created, the Silent Pool and the Panorama Sky Pool, as well as new chill-out areas, a new fitness room, a gym, 15 new suites, and a new section of the underground car park. In the main building, the dining rooms were renovated and extended; the hotel bar was relocated and redesigned, and a beautiful outdoor area was created near the bar called the “Piazza”, which has become a very popular spot for guests to enjoy breakfast and dinner alfresco.

The hotel’s façade underwent a total redesign, and a spacious driveway was built in the middle of St. Leonhard with a statue by the artist Filip Moroder Doss. The entire renovation served as a stunning testament to the 360th anniversary of the Hotel Stroblhof. In the same year, we also acquired the former Hotel Passeiererhof and converted it into a staff house so we could offer our team a great home.

The children’s house was built in 2018. We created a three-storey haven for our young guests on over 100m2, including a 3D cinema, a teenagers’ room with all kinds of games, a table tennis room, an indoor hall for football and basketball, an outdoor football pitch with artificial turf, a playground with slide, swings, trampoline, and sandbox, and a supervised children’s club.

In winter 2021, the new Sky Sauna was added, with 360-degree views of the Val Passiria/Passeiertal mountains. In addition to the previously existing Sky Pool, this adults-only area of the Sky Spa expands the wellness and relaxation area on the roof of the Stroblhof, on the most beautiful panorama deck.
